AGP pickup
Arrivals desk or a shuttle lot
Málaga-Costa del Sol (AGP) is one arrivals hall for almost every flight. Some brands hand over keys at a counter there. Others put you on a short shuttle to a lot a few minutes from the terminal. The voucher names which — do not assume the cars are lined up outside baggage claim. Allow time after landing before you join the AP-7 or the inland road toward Antequera.

First night in Málaga
The airport bus and the Cercanías into the city cover a night in Málaga. Hiring a car only to sit between AGP and the hotel is the slow version of a short hop. Collect the morning you leave town.
Costa del Sol, Ronda and the white villages
Trains do not stop at the pueblos blancos or at the Caminito trailhead. A compact car is the point of that week. The AP-7 is the fast coast motorway and is tolled in stretches; the A-7 is slower. This page does not print a toll or a day rate.
Granada or a one-way to Seville
A train can put you in Granada or Seville. A car wins when the same day also includes Ronda, the gorge, or a drop-off at a different desk. One-way fees are on the offer — filter the drop-off before you pay. The Nasrid slot and the Alcázar are city bookings, not something the AGP desk hands you.
Barcelona and Madrid stay on the train
Both cities run low-emission zones (ZBE). A foreign plate that was never registered for the day can be fined; this page does not quote the fine. Metro and walking win in town. Hire for Andalusia, not for circling a historic centre.
Documents/deposit
Licence, ID, and the card that holds the deposit
Bring a full driving licence in Latin letters, a passport or national ID, and the card in the lead driver’s name that the offer asks for. An International Driving Permit is for licences that are not in the Latin alphabet, or when that supplier’s rules say so — it is not a universal extra. The deposit is a hold, not a fee you have already lost. The amount is on the offer, not on this page.
Excess before the daily rate
Third-party cover is the usual baseline in Spain. The decision is the collision excess and whether you reduce it. A low day rate with a large excess is not a low total. Read the exclusions (tyres, glass, underbody, keys) on the offer you pay. If you are counting on a credit-card policy, confirm Spain with the issuer before you fly.
Photos in the lot, not at the first mirador
Walk the car before you leave the AGP lot: wheels, windscreen corners, bumpers, and the fuel level. Summer heat makes a rushed handover easy to regret at drop-off in Seville. Keep the return receipt until the hold clears.
Tour-first: Alhambra and Caminito

FAQ
Is AGP pickup a desk in arrivals or a shuttle?
Both exist at Málaga Airport (AGP). In-terminal counters are the faster handover once you are through baggage. Shuttle brands add a short bus to an off-site lot — usually frequent, just not “walk out and go.” Your confirmation names the meeting point. Build extra time in July and August, when several flights empty into the same hall.
Should I book an automatic at Málaga?
Manual is still the default in Spain and is usually the wider, cheaper pool. Automatics are fewer and disappear first in July and August at AGP, and the same squeeze hits Palma. If you only drive automatic, filter it when you compare and book once the flights are firm. Do not assume the AGP desk will have one left on a Saturday in August.
Can I drop the car in Seville or Granada?
Often yes: AGP to a Seville airport or city desk, or a Granada city drop, on offers that list that location. A one-way fee is separate from the day rate and is not one number for every supplier. Palma stays on Mallorca unless the contract says otherwise. Read the drop-off line before you pay.
Do Barcelona and Madrid low-emission zones affect a hire car?
Yes if you drive into them. Barcelona’s ZBE and Madrid’s ZBE (including the tighter central area) can fine a foreign plate that is not registered for that zone. Andalusia is not a free pass either — Málaga’s centre restricts some vehicles. Hire for the coast, Ronda, Granada and Seville. Use metro and walking in Barcelona and Madrid, and check the zone rules on the day you would enter.
What should I check on the excess, deposit and age?
The excess, what it excludes, the deposit hold, and the minimum age on that offer. Many suppliers start at 21 and add a young-driver condition under 25 for some classes. This page does not invent those figures — they change by car and by week. Photograph the car at pickup.
